Learning Raga Yaman Alap, Update July 2016

This is a video to document my progress learning the Alap from Raga Yaman.

I think it’s starting to come together a bit better now. Listen to this video from earlier this year, back in in April.

I feel like I’ve made some really good improvements, although I still have a long way to go.

I am playing a Barun Ray (Hiren Roy’s son) sitar. I have been taking sitar lessons since 2012.

Thanks for watching and please feel free to comment.

Audio was recorded in LogicX.

Super Weird Toy Ukulele Jam!

I keep a nice uke hanging above my desk and I thought I should make a video with it, but nope… I used my son’s toy ukulele instead!

The challenge for tonight was to pick it up and make a song using it exactly how my son had left it. I didn’t tune it, I didn’t try to tune it, I just listened to how it was set and I tried to make something from that.

This was a lot of fun to make. Also, the ending of this video get’s me giggling.

Super Crazy Guitar Pedal Improv! What was I thinking?

It’s been a stressful week! I felt like making some crazy sounds so I pulled out some toys and got to it. I had a great time and I think this came out pretty rock’n. Thank you for watching!

Whammy Pitch Shift using EHX RingThing!

The Ring Thing by Electro-Harmonix does a Whammy style pitch shift when using an expression pedal. Hear the effect in this demo as I shift up, down and in-between.

This pedal does a lot more than pitch shifting. Check out my other videos:

UniVibe sounds: EHX Ring Thing Vs Fulltone DejáVibe

The Ring Thing by Electro-Harmonix does a lot of things beyond ring modulation. I’ll compare it’s rotary phaser sound to the Fulltone Deja Vibe, a faithful recreation of the original UniVibe. Please let me know if you have any questions about these pedals.
I’ve owned these pedals for several years and I know them well.

Some additional thoughts: I should have reduced the blend on the RingThing to demo a more subtle sound. Sorry about that.
I still prefer the sound of the DejaVibe and I have continued to use that on my board. The foot controller is the big bonus to me as it’s really easy to dial in the speed. I also like the less colored sound it produces, it layers in a nice texture without overtaking my rig.

If you want a Univibe pedal I highly recommend the DejaVibe. If you want a fun toy that can make a bunch of cool sounds get the Ring Thing. The Ring Thing is SUPER cool. For example, I made a demo of it’s wicked octave fuzz settings: https://youtu.be/Mdj1YHNkKJs

Thoughts on learning the Sitar after leaving my lesson.

My teacher was extremely generous today and my lesson ran for an extra half hour. We spent that extra time playing Alap and going over super important small details.

It was one of those lessons that makes you feel like you are starting over again! I have so much to learn about the sitar. It’s been an amazing journey for me so far and I am so happy to study and learn this instrument.

Please subscribe on youtube to follow my journey, plus other fun videos!

Octave Fuzz Hack! Getting an octavia tone from the EHX RingThing.

I’ll demonstrate how to hack your EHX Ring Thing to turn it into a really great sounding Octave fuzz. But, is it as good as the Roger Mayer Octavia?

I LOVE my Roger Mayer Octavia but the Ring Thing provides a ton of other cool sounds. I wanted to experiment to see if I could find a way to hack the Ring Thing to get some of those Hendrix Octave Fuzz tones we all love while still being able to toggle the Ring Thing presets for other wacky sounds (did you know it also does a great Whammy style pitch shift too?)

I bought a Sitar! Ravi Shankar Style

While traveling to visit family I found this used sitar for sale in a local music store. It’s Ravi Shankar style and was made by Hiren Roy. I’ll keep this at my parents house to practice on when I visit family. Now I need to get back home more often!

Sa is tuned to C#.

Sitar taan at 170 bpm!

I was really determined to play this Taan at 170 beats per minute. I’ve been stuck at 160, so today I slowly worked my way up to 170 with many failed attempts. Here are the last three minutes of my practice where I struggle with and eventually hit the 170 goal.

…180 is the next milestone. My teacher wants me to eventually play all taans for this gat at 200bpm.

A taan is sort of similar to playing a riff in western music.

I took my first sitar lesson on January 27th, 2012.

Sitar Practice: Increasing taan speed. 06.01.2016

My guru wants me to play as fast as 200 beats per minute. I’m working up to that goal and practicing my newest Taan. The gat is in Raga Yaman.
